Derrell "Headband" Young
Derrell Jerome Young (a.k.a. HEADBAND) born July 3rd 1984 – originally from Pine Bluff, AR was raised in a very musical family. Everyone could sing (except him, haha). In school, he used to rap a little bit, but started to make the beats while others rapped over them. Any beat people could think of, he could do it. He played an assortment of instruments (tuba, drums and trumpet) in the band and always dreamed of becoming a music producer. In junior high, during a band function, he borrowed a headband from a friend and the rest is history. Through out school, people knew him by his nickname. After swaying away from beats, he found his love of radio while at Henderson State University. He had a three hour show that consisted of all hip-hop and r&b music. It soon became a hit around campus. His lyrical skills began to increase as he rapped all of his promos to hype of his radio show. People started to look forward to the new promos as much as the show itself. In the fall of 04, 103.7 The Buzz paid a visit to HSU for the “Young Broadcasters Competition.” His friend, “Big Daddy” Randy Seale thought it would be a perfect to rap about sports. Although he was hesitant at first, he decided to do it. Thus, the RAPCAST was born. It turned out to be the best decision he could have made. After winning the Henderson division (but losing overall), he kept an e-mail connection with Justin Acri who later allowed him to intern before his graduation. Many rapcasts later, he was hired as producer of Drivetime Sports. The Rapcasts became an official part of 103.7 The Buzz and the world hasn’t been the same since…
